    • 1). Lift the hood and connect the voltmeter's black lead to the negative terminal on the battery and the red lead to the positive terminal. Start the engine and make sure everything electrical is turned off.

    • 2). Check the voltage display on the voltmeter. With no load on the engine the voltage should be between 13.8 and 14.75 volts.

    • 3). Turn on all the electrical equipment such as headlights, air conditioning and radio. Check the voltage again. If the voltage has not risen above 15 volts and remains within limits (13.8 to 14.75 volts) it is safe to operate. If it is 1 volt off either way, replace it immediately before something major fails due to the voltage problem.
