How to Restring an Electric String Trimmer
- 1). Unplug the string trimmer. Disconnect the battery from the power head. Set the engine down on a flat piece of ground, with the head in the air, so you can comfortably work on it.
- 2). Wipe down the outer spool retainer with the rag. Grab and pinch the tabs on the outer ring of the spool retainer inward. Pull the cover off. If your model uses a locking knob or bolt on the center of the head, unscrew it counterclockwise and draw off the cover.
- 3). Pull out the inner spool and the connected spring. Some models may not use a spring. Wipe these pieces down to remove the coating of weeds. Wipe clear the inner spool retainer of any grass and weed particles. Examine these free parts for any cracks, holes and other signs of heavy wear. If these aren't functioning properly, replace these as well.
- 4). Free the inner spool of any remaining string. Cut off any string that has fused to the spool from excessive friction. Measure out and cut off the required length of string. Refer to your owner's manual for specific maximum string lengths.
- 5). Fasten the string to the inner spool. Some models may have a notch on the upper flange of the spool---insert 1 inch of the line into the notch. Other models may have a single hole on the inner spool---insert the line halfway through this hole. Other models may use two holes on the inner spool---insert both ends through these holes and draw the loop as close to the inner reel as possible. Another common attachment method is a hook in the center part of the inner spool, which you can fold the string in half and loop around the hook.
- 6). Hold the inner spool with one hand, keeping the string in place on the spool. With the other, place your fingers below the two strings, and stick your thumb in between the strings to keep it apart when winding it. Wind the line according to the arrow on the inner spool. Keep the strings tight against the spool and in even rows. Make sure the layers aren't crisscrossed or overlapping one another. Leave 6 inches unwound and stick the ends into the notches of the upper flanges on the inner spool.
- 7). Hold the inner spool while pushing the string ends through the eyelets on the outer spool retainer. Push the spring (if applicable) and inner spool down into the spool retainer. Fasten the cover in place by pushing it down or screwing the center tab in place.
