Organic Mulling Spices
- A traditional mulled spice blend includes cinnamon, allspice, clove and dried orange peels. Organic mulling spice blends also contain these traditional ingredients but the ingredients are organic, meaning that their parent plants were been grown or cultivated without the use of any pesticides or toxins. Organic mulling spice blends might also include organic ginger, organic cardamom or organic fennel seeds.
- To imbue your home with a warm and spicy scent, add 1/4 cup of an organic mulling spice blend to 3 ncups of water. Simmer in a small saucepan uncovered on low heat on the stove top. Monitor the pan to ensure that it doesn't boil over or boil dry. The aroma of cinnamon and spice will fill the air while adding humidity to the room. If you don't have a pre-mixed organic blend, toss a few organic cinnamon sticks and whole cloves into the pan with pieces of orange rind. If the liquid level drops to 1/2 inch deep, add more water to prevent the mulling spices from burning.
- To add flavor to your favorite tea drink, wrap 2 or 3 tbsp. of an organic mulling spice blend in a square of cheesecloth or coffee filter and tie it shut with a piece of kitchen twine. Steep the bag in a cup of hot tea for full-bodied flavor.
Alternatively, spiced cider is both an autumn and cold weather treat. To make, pour apple juice into a medium-sized pan and place it on low heat. Add a bundle of mulling spice blend to the cider and simmer for 15 minutes. Strain the mulling spices from the juice and serve the spiced cider in thick mugs. Garnish each cup of cider with a cinnamon stick for an even spicier flavor. - Mulled wine, also called Glogg, is a Scandanavian cold weather tradition. It is a combination of red wine, sugar, vodka and mulling spices. Recipes vary, but they each contain a few basic steps and ingredients. In a large saucepan or stockpot, combine 2 bottles dry red wine, 3 cups vodka, 3 tbsp. organic mulling spices tied in a cheesecloth, 1 tsp. orange zest and 1/4 cup sugar. Allow the mixture to heat up and maintain it at a low simmer for about 30 minutes. Do not let it come to a full boil. Serve glogg in mugs.
