    • 1). Position your fabric inside-out so the side that is 20 inches long is at the top horizontally. Stretch out the fabric cord 1/2 inch beneath the top edge. The cord should ideally be centered so that 2 inches extend from both the left and right sides of the fabric. Fold down the fabric over the cord at least an additional 1/2 inch.

    • 2). Sew the folded edge to the fabric, being careful not to sew through the cord located inside. It helps to press the cord back against the curve of the fold as you sew. This forms the drawstring that will be used to close your yoga bag. Tie a large knot at each end of the cord.

    • 3). Turn over the material. The "right" side of the fabric should be facing you now. Fold the material, inside-out, into a long rectangle with the drawstring portion at the top. This will form the body of the bag.

    • 4). Fold the long fabric strip in half so that the fabric is now 1 1/2 inches wide and 40 inches long. Stitch the fabric closed along its length. This will be the carrying strap of the yoga bag.

    • 5). Place one end of the strap on the bag 2 inches up from the bottom of the folded rectangle on the open edge of the fold. For best results, allow the last 2 inches of the strap to lie on top of the fabric of the bag. When the bag is stitched closed, these last 2 inches will help anchor the strap to the interior of the bag, keeping it securely attached. Repeat this with the opposite end of the strap by placing it 2 inches down from the top of the rectangle on the open edge of the fold. Allow the first 2 inches of the strap to lie on top of the fabric.

    • 6). Stitch a 1-inch-wide seam along the bottom and the open side of the bag, making sure to sew through the straps, fastening them to the bag within the seam. Invert the bag so that the exterior side of the material is visible.

    • 7). Slide the rolled up yoga mat into the bag, and pull the drawstring tight before tying it closed. Put the carrying strap on your shoulder, and you are ready for your next yoga class.
