Natural Pain Relief for Labor and Birth
Updated June 09, 2015.
Labor is painful. There are, however, things you can to do decrease the amount of pain that you feel in labor. Here are some active, natural tips for dealing with pain during labor and birth:
- Breathe at a normal pace. If your breathing becomes fast or frantic work to slow it down.
- The power of positive thinking: keep your spirits up.
- Ask for a massage from your labor partner or doula. You might also enjoy a good hug, snuggling in early labor or simply holding hands.
- Ask for emotional support from your labor coach, doula or others around you. What does this look like to you? Is it talking? Is it silent meditation? Be specific.
- To take care of your needs like emptying your bladder regularly and eating and drinking to comfort.
- Change position frequently, rock in a chair, and walk. Alternate periods of activity with rest.
- Make noise if it feels good. Moaning or singing can often feel very relaxing in labor.
- Try thinking of a peaceful setting, fond memory, favorite activity, something mundane (like grocery shopping) to occupy your mind or your baby.
- Try water, like the tub or shower, a massage or jacuzzi.
- Apply heat or cold to areas of pain. Rice socks work well for warm, moist heat. For cold, you can use a wet wash cloth or even a baggy filled with ice.
- Distract yourself: Read a book, dance, listen to music, watch TV, go for a walk or solve puzzles.
