How to Make Your Own Nurse Mask
- 1). Measure the area you want the mask to cover with a measuring tape --- in most cases, over your nose down to your chin for the height measurement of the mask and from the middle of one cheekbone to the other for the length measurement.
- 2). Cut a rectangle of fabric the size of the measurements from Step 1 using scissors. For example, if your nose-to-chin measurement were 4 inches and your cheek-to-cheek measurement were 6 inches, you would cut a rectangle of fabric 4 inches tall by 6 inches wide.
- 3). Measure the distance around your head in line with where the top of the mask will sit on your face. Add 6 inches to this measurement. Cut a piece of bias binding in the same length as this measurement. This piece will be called "bias binding A."
- 4). Measure the distance around your head in line with where the bottom of the mask will sit on your face. Add 6 inches to this measurement. Cut a second piece of bias binding in the same length as this measurement. This piece will be called "bias binding B."
- 5). Cut 2 equal-length pieces of bias binding that are the same length as the nose to chin measurement. You will use these pieces of bias binding on the two shorter, vertical sides of the mask.
- 6). Fold small pleats into each end of the fabric rectangle. Hand sew these pleats roughly into place with a needle and thread. You will not see these stitches once you have finished the mask.
- 7). Press all four pieces of bias tape in half lengthwise with an iron.
- 8). Insert the two shorter, gathered ends of the fabric rectangle into the middle of the folded bias tape, and pin them into place. Sew as close to unfolded edge of the bias tape as possible on each side of the fabric rectangle. Trim off any excess bias tape.
- 9). Insert the top of the fabric rectangle into the middle of folded bias tape A. Check to ensure each side of the mask has an even amount of bias tape. Pin the tape into place. Insert the bottom of the fabric rectangle into the middle of folded bias tape B. Check to ensure each side of the mask has an even amount of bias tape, then pin the tape into place.

Sew along each length of bias binding from one end to the other using a sewing machine. Sew as close to the unfolded edge of the bias binding as possible. Tie the nurse's mask around your head.
