How to Lighten Bricks
- 1). Clean the entire surface of the brick to remove any dirt, dust and debris from the area. Wipe down the brick with a clean rag and brush off any small chips of brick or mortar with a broom. Sweep the broom over all of the brick and get into the crevices and cracks.
- 2). Apply acrylic masonry primer to the brick. Pour the primer into a paint tray and apply the primer over the surface with a paint roller. Spread it out, working from one side to the other. Apply the primer in a "W" pattern, working in 3 by 3 foot sections. Allow it at least one hour to properly dry.
- 3). Place a tube of exterior silicone sealant into a caulk gun and cut off the tip of the sealant with a utility knife. Pull the trigger and apply a bead of caulk over any gaps or cracks in the mortar between the pieces of brick.
- 4). Pour the desired color of exterior paint into a paint tray and roll it on the brick with a paint roller. Paint the brick, working from one side to the other in a "W" pattern just like the primer was applied. Continue over the brick until the first coat is applied. Wait one hour for the first coat to dry and apply a second coat in the same manner.
- 5). Inspect the area and verify the brick is completely covered to the desired color after it has had time to dry. Add a third coat if necessary, to get the look you want.
