Having a baby is an expensive proposition, and many first-time parents have a hard time finding the money for all the equipment and clothing the newborn will need. That's where friends and family members come in. A baby shower allows them to provide many of the essentials and some of the luxuries. Hosting a baby shower may seem like a lot of work, but it doesn't have to be difficult or time-consuming, and you can easily make the party memorable for the mom-to-be. By choosing a simple, baby-friendly theme and decorating to match, you can save yourself hours of guesswork and treat your expectant friend to a sweet party.

    Special Delivery

    • Let the iconic image of the baby-bearing stork inspire your decorations. Put a "Caution: Stork Crossing" sign at the front door to set the playful mood, and decorate with stuffed storks and baby-related props such as clothespins and teddy bears. For dessert, order a sheet cake with an image of the stork on it.

    Books for Baby

    • Build the baby's library before he's even born. Ask the guests to bring children's books in lieu of cards--they can use the inside front cover to write a personal message to the mother and her baby. Decorate the party with children's books on the shelves, mantle and coffee table. If you're feeling crafty, print out tiny book covers and attach them to toothpicks. Stick the book flags into cupcakes or hors d'oeuvres.

    Circus Shower

    • Commemorate your friend's admission to the circus of parenthood with a circus-themed baby shower. Decorate the table with bright, garish colors--pinks, yellows and blues. Create a candy buffet with circus confections by filling a variety of glass vases and bowls with gum balls, circus peanuts, malted milk balls, lollipops and jelly beans. Hang balloons liberally throughout the space and decorate with silly props, such as pinwheels and clowns. Give bags of cotton candy and boxes of animal crackers as favors.
