How to Mount Turkey Feathers
- 1). Select a broad range of tail and wing feathers so that you can place a nice, even display. The feathers that look best on the bird might not necessarily be the best for display; make sure you have a sampling when the time for mounting comes. Comb your fingers lightly through the tail feathers to sort out any ruffles. This gives you a chance to detect any small imperfections in the feathers before mounting them to the display board.
- 2). Lightly apply industrial adhesive glue to the quills of the turkey feathers. If you are making a horizontal mounting (a display meant to be affixed to a wall), gently put the turkey feathers in a fan shape along the top edge of the board. Be careful not to overlap the quills. If you are creating a vertical mounting (for display on flat surfaces), place the quills into pre-drilled holes, so that the feathers stand up.
- 3). Allow adequate time to dry. This may vary, depending on the type of adhesive you are using and the humidity.
Add turkey wing feathers in a secondary display, usually just below (in horizontal mountings) or just forward (in vertical mountings) so that the tail feather display remains the focal point. - 4). Place the display away from direct sunlight and any intense heat source. These factors can quickly damage a turkey feather mounting display.
