How to Install a Starter on a 2008 Dodge Avenger
- 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise the vehicle with the floor jack, and support the front with stands. Remove the through-bolt that holds the engine to the the front motor mount. Remove the two bolts from the right side of the front cross-member. Remove the three bolts from the left side of the front cross-member. Remove the cross-member and set it aside.
- 2). Remove the front engine-mount bolt and remove the mounts. Loosen the front engine through-bolts and remove the front engine bracket from the engine. The starter motor is on top of these mounts, on the front of the engine. Remove the upper starter mounting bolt and the ground wire from the starter motor. Remove the battery cable from the starter. Remove the lower starter bolt and the starter.
- 3). Pull the starter up from the engine block. Work it free by twisting it.
- 1). Rotate and twist the new starter motor into place. Tip the starter up. Install the middle and lower starter bolts. Tighten the bolts. Hook up the battery cable to the starter. Install the solenoid connector.
- 2). Reinstall all engine mounts and mounting bolts that you removed. Reinstall the front cross-member into place and secure it with the mounting bolts.
- 3). Raise the Avenger above the jack stands. Remove the stands and lower the vehicle to the ground. Connect the negative battery cable. Test the starter for correct operation.
