In other words, all you have to do is buy foods or beverages with a lot of antioxidants in it, and you'll automatically be healthier.
Well, it is not that easy.
Antioxidants can be found in a variety of foods and beverages.
For example, perhaps one of the most popular examples right now is green tea.
People are going crazy over green tea because supposedly green tea contains a plethora of antioxidants that are good for your body and blood stream.
Antioxidants are important because they serve as a type of defense mechanism for your body.
Antioxidants in your body work doubly hard to fight off infections as well as prevent infections from ever starting.
Think of it like having a little military inside of your body that is working for you 24 hours a day; seven days a week.
However, while antioxidants are great for you, like too much of any good thing, they can work against you if you consume too much.
You may have heard a lot of talk recently about the antioxidants and the importance of vitamins and foods that contain them.
But what exactly are antioxidants? Why are they so important? And how can taking them improve your health? When your body begins to break down food the chemical process can create free radicals in the body.
This can also occur due to exposure to dangerous environmental influences such as radiation and tobacco.
The damage done to your body by the presence of free radicals can lead to various types of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health problems.
Antioxidants serve as a type of defense force against free radicals, working through the body to collect the free radicals that were created by the oxidation process in your body and to repair the damage that they have caused.
Antioxidants can be found in a wide variety of foods that you may already be aware of in relation to other health benefits.
Some of the most important antioxidants are: Vitamin A, which can be found in carrots, tomatoes, broccoli, squash, potatoes, cantaloupes, and collard greens; Vitamin C which is abundant in citrus fruit, cranberries, green peppers, strawberries, and green leafy vegetables; Vitamin E, also found in leafy green vegetables plus nuts, seeds, whole grains and liver oil.
And lastly on our list of essential antioxidants is selenium which is abundant in Fish, eggs, garlic, grains, and chicken.
Other important antioxidants can also include: lutein, lycopene, flavonoids / polyphenols , and lingan.
With such a wide range of foods and vitamin supplements available that are rich in antioxidants, adding them to your diet is fairly simple.
And given the enormous importance that antioxidants play in your overall health, there is no better time to start that right now.
