How to Load a Mortar Firework

    • 1). Place your mortar racks, the tubes that your fireworks are fired from, in the location where you will light them, making sure it is open with no trees or buildings nearby.

    • 2). Unwrap the fuse, the string that is attached to the shell, and lower the mortar shell down into the tube, making sure the lift charge, the cylinder portion where the fuse enters the shell, is on the bottom. Stop lowering and select a larger tube, if the mortar shell gets stuck in the tube, or will not lower to the bottom without being pushed or hammered.

    • 3). Hang the mortar fuse out of the end of the tube, if using a single, hand-lit fuse. Tape the fuse to the top of the mortar tube with masking tape if it keeps falling back inside the tube, making sure the mortar shell still sits on the bottom of the tube.

    • 4). Attach the mortar fuse, if using a fast chain or delayed chain fuse, to the chain fuse by laying the mortar fuse next to the chain fuse and wrapping the mortar fuse and the chain fuse together using an inch of masking tape. Choose Quickmatch, Foil-Taped Fast Fuse or Foil-Taped Fast Visco as a chain fuse for mortars to ignite simultaneously. Choose American Visco, Chinese Visco, Fast Visco, Fast Fuse, or Time Fuse, each of which burns at a different rate, as a chain fuse for mortars to ignite sequentially with a time delay.

    • 5). Fold the fuse in half, if using an electric fuse, at the top of the tube, and feed the loop end through the hole in the side of the tube from the inside. Slide the wire from the loose end through the loop on the outside of the tube. Pull the wire on the inside of the tube to tighten the knot. Connect the loose end to the electric switch by splitting the wire ends apart, pulling back the plastic to expose the wire, and inserting the wire, metal on metal, into the electric terminal. Roll up the excess wire in your hand and twist two or three times to keep it out of the way.
