Metal Detecting - An Inexpensive Hobby

103 44
I was walking to the beach to metal detect when someone saw my metal detector and asked me how much mine cost.
I was holding a used White's metal detector with ear phones.
I told him that I bought it from a local pawn store for $100.
I was also holding a medium size steel scoop, which cost me about $15 and a simple plastic grocery bag to carry my finds.
The total price for my gear was $115.
The amount of change and number of potentially valuable objects I could find - endless! But that day, all I found was $.
26.
Oh, well! Maybe next time I might find that emerald ring I "promised" my wife.
Metal detectors don't have to be expensive.
The lowest price I have seen for a good used one was only $60, but you can pay well into the thousands.
Bounty Hunter makes the best of the least expensive metal detectors.
I owned one for ten years and it paid for itself several times over! The $60 machine has all you need to find the same number of objects as the most expensive one.
The difference? That high priced detector has more bells and whistles on it, such as: object identification, object depth, and unnecessary pinpointing.
I'm not a fan of those extra capabilities, because they steal the fun of guessing what is beneath me and the anticipation of digging it out.
There is one specific type of detector that you need to scan on ocean or lake beaches - an underwater metal detector.
I own a "Sand Shark" metal detector, which is a very simple machine to operate in water and out of water.
I bought it for $225 - the lowest price I know of for one that is waterproof.
Paying more for a waterproof detector is worth it, because you can find so much more along the ocean or lake shore - largely gold and silver rings! Beachgoers lose more rings due to gobs of suntan lotion they put on.
This loosens those rings from their fingers and they fall to the sand below.
Lots of coins can be found, because those swimmers lose coins from the pockets of their swimming trunks.
Metal detectors can be inexpensive for the amateur treasure hunter.
The rewards can turn your detector into a great investment, but that can only work if you are persistent in the hobby.
In a few years, if you are still taking the hobby seriously, you probably ought to invest in a more expensive metal detector.
The real reward comes with all of the fun you can have finding lost treasure beneath your feet.
