    • The Deskjet 4160 from Hewlett-Packard is an ink-jet printer. It can print documents at up to 30 pages per minute, as well as handle photo printing with an optional photo ink cartridge. Since the printer uses ink cartridges, it will run out of black and color ink over time and need a new replacement cartridge. If you are unsure how much ink you have left, you can use your computer's built-in printer tools to display the estimated ink levels.

    Open Printer Toolbox from Document

    • Open the document that you wish to print. Click on the "File" option and select "Print." Select the HP Deskjet 4160 as your printer and click on the "Properties" button. Select the "Services" tab and click on the icon to "Service This Device." Click on the "Estimated Ink Level" tab. A graphical representation of much black and color ink is left will be displayed. If your ink levels are low, you should purchase a replacement to have ready when it goes empty.

    Open Print Toolbox in Windows

    • With your printer connected to your computer, turn on the printer. Click on the "Start" button in Windows and select "Control Panel." Open the "Printer and Other Hardware" folder. Right-click on the "HP Deskjet 4160" icon and select "Preferences." Go to the "Services" tab and click on the icon to "Service This Device." Go to the "Estimated Ink Level" tab.

    Open Printer Toolbox on Mac

    • Double-click the "Macintosh HD" icon on your desktop, open the "Applications" folder and open the "Utilities" folder. Select the "Printer Set Up Utility" icon. Choose the HP Deskjet 4160 as your printer and click on "Utility." Select the "Ink Level" panel to display the printer ink levels.
