The Montreux Jazz Festival
- The Montreux Jazz Festival typically lasts for two to three weeks, but the length varies from year to year. The first festival ran for three days, while the 1977 event ran for 23 days. In addition to dozens of concerts by headlining acts, the festival also features many free musical performances, workshops and artist demonstrations.
- The list of artists featured at the festival over the years includes Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, David Bowie, India Arie, Lang Lang, Jessye Norman, Anjelique Kidjo and the Dave Matthews Band. Prince performed a world-exclusive surprise set at the festival in 2007. One of the main festival venues is named for jazz great Miles Davis.
- Montreux is a resort town that is about 70 minutes by train from Geneva. It attracts visitors for its scenic views of the Swiss Alps. The Montreux Jazz Festival's founder, Claude Nobs, established the event to promote area tourism.
