Startle Reflex and How Does it Work?

103 37
One of the first things that is tested in the hospital when a child is born is their startle reflex.
It is a sign that the child is in good health and a good indication that the child has a healthy nervous system.
It is what takes you from a state of all is well to action.
A healthy startle reflex is a good thing, but what happens when you're startled by every little thing? Everyone has felt it before.
When we are over stressed, this healthy normal response can become aggravated.
When we are over anxious every little thing can startle us.
Just the phone ringing or a car door slamming can put you into a momentary panic.
An excellent example of this is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Things that would not even be noticed by many can trigger total panic in someone suffering from this disorder.
So what can a person do about this? When the simple things in daily life are making you panic? The first and most important thing is to try to take the best care of yourself you can if you are having these problems.
Get plenty of sleep, eat healthy well balanced meals, talk to good friends and family to gain some prospective on your problems, etc.
That being said there are often times when this is just not a possibility.
The fact that you can't get the sleep, good meals, and the time off that a person needs to maintain a sound body and mind is often the root of this problem.
What else can you do to try to get your nerves back under control? A lot of that depends on you and how severe your symptoms are and how much you are willing to commit to regaining your sense of calm.
Each person will have to decide what long term solution will work for them and what they can commit to.
Do you want to turn to medications? Would you be more comfortable with a more natural holistic treatment? The solutions are as varied as people that deal with a chronic and reoccurring startle reflex.
I think one the most important things to consider is what did you use to do when you were happy? What can you do that you use to do? For example, you use to go fishing on weekends? Did you had a pet that was your joy? Were you in a bowling league or a social group? What did you always dream of doing? What are your fondest memories and dreams? How can you integrate those things back into your life? Dwelling on the negative and the source of your problems will not necessarily fix them.
Take time to step back and out of stressful situations, even if it is just for a moment.
Many soldiers find great joy in fishing in the lakes Saddam built at his homes in Iraq because it gives them a short break from their reality.
Try to find something to be your own oasis in this stress filled world.
Take time to step back from all the stress when you can and look for ways to calm your nerves while you live your daily life.
