Things to Do in Dunstable

Dunstable is a market town outside of London in Bedfordshire.
The history of the area can be traced back to Paleolithic man and there is an Iron Age Hill Fort nearby.
The Romans settled the area and built paved roads.
The name most likely comes from Saxons that took over after the Romans.
The town prospered by travelers staying over for a night when traveling from London.
Many pubs and inns opened up and prospered.
In the 20th century printing and motor vehicles were large industries but today many of the large factories have since closed down.
Many of the stores have closed down as they cannot compete with many of the out of town retail parks.
There are several theaters in town including the Grove Theatre, Little Theatre and the auditorium.
The Dunstable Rep theatre Group performs several performances throughout the year.
The Grove Theater opened in 2007 and is the premier center for the arts in Dunstable.
The Priory church of St Peter is an excellent example of Norman architecture.
It was here that King Henry Vii divorced Catherine of Aragon.
There is a monastery, bake house, stables, brew house, buttery, stable sand infirmary.
Much of the decorations and artwork were stolen in the 1500s.
Waulud's Bank is a Neolithic Henge that was traced back to 3, 000BC.
A Henge is a prehistoric structure that is oval or circular in shape surrounded by an earthwork, most commonly a ditch.
There can be several entrances to the structure.
Henges are thought to be a place for rituals as then cannot be defended well.
Dunstable downs is right outside of town.
This is a chalky escarpment and is used mainly for hang gliding, paragliding and kite flying.
The downs are the highest spot in Bedfordshire.
It is possible to climb the hill from the nearby town or you can drive up to the summit.
