    Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Fund

    • Congresswoman Patsy Takemoto Mink was the first minority woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. She was also a strong advocate for education and causes to support low-income women. She created the Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Fund to support mothers with children under that age of 18 in pursuing higher education. Five scholarships are awarded each year in the amount of $2,000 to a woman with demonstrated financial need. Funds can be used to pursue a vocational, college or professional degree.

    AARP Scholarship Fund

    • Single mothers with older children may opt for the AARP Scholarship Fund. The AARP Scholarship assists women over the age 40 in pursuing higher education. "Research shows women are less likely to have enough money in the second half of their lives because of lower earnings and different work patterns," explains AARP. The scholarship fund helps older women afford the cost of higher education and overcome financial and employment barriers.

Preference is given to applicants who are raising the children of another family member, underemployed with no health benefits or have been out of the work force for more than five years.

    Project Working Mom

    • Mothers considering an online education can apply for the Project Working Mom scholarship offered by eLearners.com. As of 2010, the Project Working Mom scholarship covers the full cost of each winner's tuition. Selections are based on essay responses, the applicant's educational background and description of career goals. Each applicant must address why an online education works best for her. Scholarships can be used for undergraduate or graduate study.

    Denny's Single Parent Scholarship Fund

    • Hispanic singe mothers are eligible to receive the Denny's Single Parent Student Scholarship. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale and be enrolled or planning to enroll in an undergraduate program. As of 2011, award amounts range from $500 to $1,500.
