The Castle of Gibralfaro

This is probably the first thing you will notice when you visit Malaga. It is located on a mountain of about 131 meters height. The castle is the highest point of the city and thus it can be seen from far away, just as you can overlook the whole city of Malaga from the castle. It is a fortress that was built in the first half of the 14th century by the Moors in place of an ancient lighthouse constructed by Phoenicians. Both the Gibralfaro castle and the La Alcazamba fortress which is located near to the castle were built to defend the city of Malaga.

The previous castle that was settled in the place was built in the 8th century and the castle has retained the same name since that time. The name of the castle - €Gibralfaro€ has come from the Phoenician words €gebel faro€, which can be roughly translated as €the rock of the lighthouse€. It really is a place of huge cultural value and a great place to get to know the different periods of time in Malaga. The fortress is one of the things you should definitely see when you come here. Of course, it is very easy to find this place if you are going on foot, because you can see the castle from nearly any point of Malaga. For those who are interested in visiting particularly this place, the best time to visit any place in Malaga is in autumn or spring. Though any time is good to visit these wonderful places, if you are going for long walks and if you do not love very hot weather, it should be the most pleasant time to be here.

The castle of Gibralfaro is very close to the fortress of La Alcazaba and they are connected by a small path that leads through a breathtaking place vakantiewoning spanje. It is especially good if you decide to combine a visit of these two places, as their history is interrelated. Recently a forest of eucalyptus and pines has been planted on the hill. The castle is settled in an amazing vivid area and it is a great place to go to if you are looking forward to spending some peaceful time and want to get to know the nature of Malaga better. If you visit this place, it is also notable that you will have to walk a lot.
