It is normal for someone to be shy to a certain extent.
However, suffering from social anxiety disorder (SAD) is altogether different- it is significantly graver, more complicated, and more debilitating to the person.
The disorder goes beyond shyness because in the case of a person with this disorder, his well-being and functioning is largely affected.
While there are many activities and situations that non-patients do not find difficulty getting themselves into, a person with SAD may perceive harm from such situations.

In essence, both actual and imagined experiences of being judged and humiliated trigger the said fears.
Symptoms of social anxiety disorder The usual symptoms that a person with SAD includes trembling, stammering, stuttering, palpitations, blushing and other panic attack symptoms.
During more intense episodes, the person may actually experience a full-blown panic attack.
As such, the person with social anxiety disorder not only fears getting involved in situations that he perceives will humiliate him; he also fears the symptoms and experiences that his disorder entail him to undergo when placed in such situations.
For a person who feels as though he is constantly being scrutinized by others, he fears getting into situations that exposes him to certain people.
Some common scenarios for a person with this disorder include not wanting to eat in a public place; avoiding opportunities to speak in front of several people; staying at home instead of going to parties with big crowds; and other similar instances.
Through these examples, it is easy to notice how the person's life becomes bound to very limited activities and situations.
The person falls short in living a more quality and socially-enriched life.
How to treat social anxiety disorder People who suffer from SAD are inclined to resort to substance abuse, such as excessive alcohol consumption.
It provides relief for the person in a manner that soothes and reduces the person's anxiety.
However, this way of self-medicating merely provides temporary relief, and induces long-term casualties.
Alcohol, for example, has been established as not only hazardous to health in general, it is also a factor that causes and further reinforces anxiety.
It is important for the person to know the appropriate treatment methods that can cure his anxiety.
These do not necessarily warrant medication.
Several powerful techniques, using natural means, exist to treat the anxiety-ridden person.
The methods, in themselves, efficiently address the problem and cure the person from his fear of social situations, scrutiny, and of fear itself.
