How to Install Bosch Oxygen Sensors
- 1). Ascertain what type of oxygen sensor your vehicle needs. Oxygen sensors come in a variety of types--including wideband and narrowband; one, two, three or four-wire sensors; and universal sensors. Consult your vehicle's documentation or a repair manual to find out what type of oxygen sensor is used by your car.
- 2). Locate your old oxygen sensor. Do this by starting at the rear of your exhaust manifold and moving up towards the front of your vehicle. Most older vehicles before 1990 will only have one oxygen sensor located forward of the catalytic converter, while newer vehicles will have an additional sensor just before the catalytic converter. Vehicles with a dual-exhaust system will have an identical set of oxygen sensors on each exhaust manifold.
- 3). Unplug your old oxygen sensor's wire from where it connects to your vehicle's wiring harness. Take care not to damage the electrical connector on your car when pulling the plug out.
- 4). Use your wrench or ratchet and socket to unscrew the old oxygen sensor from the exhaust manifold. Discard the sensor when you have successfully uninstalled it.
- 5). Coat the threads of your Bosch oxygen sensor with WD-40 or an anti-seize compound of your choice. This is to ensure a smooth installation of the sensor as well as prevent damage to the threads and to make it easier to remove next time it needs to be replaced.
- 6). Screw the Bosch oxygen sensor into the exhaust manifold and tighten it down snugly. Once you have done that, re-connect the sensor's wires to the wiring harness via the electrical connector mentioned in Step 3.
- 7). Repeat Steps 2-6 for any other oxygen sensors as necessary.
