How to Cook With Solar Power
- 1). Find an outdoor spot directly in the sunlight, free from shade, strong winds and animals or other passersby. Set up your solar cooker facing the sun, preferably between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on a clear or partly cloudy day.
- 2). Prepare food as the recipe instructs, adding seasoning to taste. Cut food into smaller portions to cook more quickly. Separate the ingredients by length of cooking time.
- 3). Place the food in the pot (slower cooking food should be added first), and put the lid securely on top. Insert the pot into the center of the solar cooker so it receives reflected sunlight from each of the sides of the cooker.
- 4). Check the solar cooker occasionally to ensure it is receiving direct sunlight, and add ingredients that cook quickly near the end of cooking time.
- 5). Remove the pot from the solar cooker after the meal has cooked for the required time (see Resources below for solar cooking recipes). Stir the food if necessary and serve immediately.
