Psychology Scholarships & Grants
- Doctoral-level students in behavioral health can obtain educational assistance from the American Psychological Association (APA) through the Predoctoral Fellowship in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services program. While the program extends eligibility to all students, it intends to promote health services in minority groups and encourages minority students to apply. It awards fellowships to students planning careers in counseling, school psychology and clinical psychology. Candidates must enroll full-time in an APA-accredited doctoral psychology program and hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. Psychology doctoral students can apply online at the APA website. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration funds the program.
- The International Honor Society in Psychology, known also as Psi Chi, offers scholarships to psychology students. The Allyn and Bacon Award funds undergrads competing in a research paper contest up to $1,000, as of January 2011. Applicants are required to hold membership in Psi Chi. The Regional Research Award provides up to $300 to undergraduate and graduate psychology students and bases awards on research papers. Each Psi Chi scholarship program has its own guidelines and application procedures.
- The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) offers up to $5,000, as of 2011, through its Minority Scholarship Program. Eligible are American Indian, Hispanic, Alaska Native, African American, Pacific Islander and Asian students enrolled in NASP-approved psychology programs. Candidates must hold membership in the NASP, be U.S. citizens and have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. Only students enrolled in school psychology programs leading to specialist degrees can apply; the program does not extend eligibility to students pursuing doctoral degrees. As of January 2011, students received up to $5,000.
- The Department of Psychology at Illinois State University awards multiple grants, fellowships and scholarships to its students, who can complete for up to $500 in funding, as of January 2011, through the Laura Berk Undergraduate Writing Award. Psychology majors completing a minimum of 30 credit hours can apply for the Walter Vernon Scholarship in Psychology, which pays up to $900. The Robert G. Bone Scholarship extends eligibility to undergraduate students who have completed a minimum of four semesters at Illinois State University. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3.7 and can receive cash awards and recognition at the Bone Student Center.
