How to Inspect a Tie Rod

    • 1). Jack up the front of the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.

    • 2). Shake the rim and tire back and forth as if they were being steered quickly. If there is some free-play, then further inspection is needed.

    • 3). Crawl under the front of the vehicle and have an assistant shake the rim and tire back and forth.

    • 4). Observe the movement of the outer tie rod end with a flashlight. If there is movement, then the outer tie rod end is faulty.

    • 5). Grab the inner tie rod end while your assistant shakes the rim and tire and feel for movement. If there is movement, then the inner tie rod end has failed.

    • 6). Repeat Steps 2 through 5 to check the tie rod ends on the other side of the vehicle.
