- 1). Clean your floor thoroughly. Vacuum to remove all dust, lint and surface dirt, then mop with mild soap and water. Allow the floor to dry completely.
- 2). Sand the floor with a palm sander and medium-grit sandpaper. Sanding creates texture that will allow the primer to grip onto the floor. This will make the paint job more durable over time. If you are working with a very large area, consider renting a drum sander to make the job go faster.
- 3). Mop the floor with a clean, damp mop to remove sanding dust.
- 4). Brush primer along the perimeter of the room where the floor meets the wall. Use a good-quality brush to reduce visible brush strokes. Roll primer onto the larger areas of the floor using a 1/4-inch-nap roller. Work in one 6-foot square area at a time. Allow the primer to dry completely.
- 5). Apply white paint using the same technique used to apply the primer. Oil-based paint is a good choice for floors because it is more durable than latex paint. It also takes much longer to fully cure and is slightly more difficult to work with. You will need to allow a full 30 days for the paint to cure completely. While the paint is curing, walk on it with stockinged feet only, and don't put furniture on top of the paint.
