How to Make a Curtain Box on a Window
- 1). Climb up on a step ladder at one side of the curtains and place the end of a tape measure on the wall. Measure out from the wall until you reach the curtain rod, which is the depth. Add 1 inch to the measurement and write it down.
- 2). Reposition the ladder to the center of the curtains and measure from the left side to the right side of the curtain rod, which is the width. Add 1 inch to this measurement and write it down.
- 3). Lay a piece of 1/2-inch thick plywood on a work table and transfer the width measurement onto it using the tape measure and pencil. Extend the sides down 24 inches and connect all of the lines to create a rectangle.
- 4). Draw the depth measurement on the plywood and extend the sides down 24 inches as well. This will be one of the sides of the cornice. Make an identical shape beside the first one for the other side of the cornice.
- 5). Cut the cornice pieces out of the plywood using a circular saw, table saw or a jig saw. Always wear safety glasses when cutting plywood.
- 6). Secure any joints in the longest plywood piece by placing a mending plate over the edges of the seam and securing it with wood screws. This is only required if your cornice is longer than 8 feet, which is the standard length for plywood sheets.
- 7). Stand the long front section of the cornice up and align the left side piece perpendicular to the left side. Secure the side piece by inserting 1 1/2-inch brads with a brad nailer. Space the brads every 2 inches. Repeat the process on the right side of the cornice.
- 8). Create a top for the cornice by measuring out the length and width of the top edge of the finished cornice. Cut another piece of plywood out to these dimensions and secure it to the top of the cornice using more brads.
- 9). Wrap upholstery batting over the front of the cornice and staple it to the back using a staple gun. Lay your desired fabric on the floor with the finished side facing down. Center the cornice on the fabric and wrap it around the back before securing it with more staples.

Install two L-brackets on the wall at the location of where each end of the cornice reaches. Simply position the brackets with one arm facing out toward you and the other flush with the wall. Insert the provided screws to secure them to the wall. Hang the cornice on top of the brackets and insert two to four more screws through the top of the cornice into the holes in the bracket to secure it.
