Anxiety and anxiety disorders affect one out of every four people and produce symptoms such as a racing heart beat, palpitations, hyperventilation, light headedness, appetite loss, urinary frequency, diarrhea, indecision, tremors, enlarge pupils, sweating, sexual difficulties, headache, poor attention span, insomnia, irritability, dry mouth, nightmares, fatigue, and difficulty swallowing.
It probably comes as no surprise that certain medications might in fact produce symptoms that mimic those of anxiety but perhaps the most fascinating part of our discussion concerning anxiety producing medications is that many of the drugs used to treat anxiety lead to or intensify the very symptoms they are trying to treat.
Let's briefly explore five popular drug categories which have the dubious distinction of being anxiety producing medications.
*SSRIs/Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors: Treatment for anxiety, depression, and eating disorders Anxiety like side effects: Palpitations, headache, sleep disturbances, anxiety, tremor, dizziness, nervousness, fatigue, loss of concentration, irritability, nausea, diarrhea, appetite loss, sweating, hot flashes, twitching, and impotence   *Benzodiazepines: Treatment for anxiety Anxiety like side effects: Dizziness, headache, anxiety, tremors, nausea, and diarrhea   *Hormone replacement medications: Reduce menopause symptoms, treat osteoporosis, and treat ovarian failure Anxiety like side effects: Dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and appetite irregularities   *Statins: Cholesterol management Headache, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, muscle cramps, and tremor   *Anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory medication: Treatment of arthritis pain Anxiety like side effects: Fatigue, anxiety, dizziness, nervousness, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, sweating, tremors, confusion, and shortness or breath   In scanning over the short list of medications capable of producing anxiety symptoms perhaps the most interesting and troubling observation is that the two medication categories used to treat anxiety (SSRIs and Benzodiazepines) actually produce side effect that could cause the condition.
While this is troubling it is important to point out that these medications are very effective and most of those who use them experience few side effects is any.
While this may be the case, if you are taking one or more prescription medication and feel extremely nervous it might be good idea to mention it to your medical professional.
Additionally, the long list of potential side effects associated with anxiety producing medications has lead many people to seek alternative forms of treatment such as herbal remedies.
Herbal remedies for anxiety, especially when used as a tool in a comprehensive well thought out treatment plan are a safe, affordable and an effective option worth considering.
