    • 1). Keep a list of sources handy at all times while writing. Always include the author, title of the work or entry, name of publication if the referenced work is part of a larger text like an encyclopedia, page number of referenced material and the date of publication. For electronic sources, also keep the URL for the reference.

    • 2). Enter the last name of the author or editor followed by a comma and the first name. Insert a period to end the name entry. Bibliographies are to be ordered alphabetically, last names listed first. Example: Smith, John.

    • 3). Skip entering any piece of information that is not available. This is the reason why formatting citations for electronic sources can be difficult. Information about the origin of the article is often not listed. If a piece of information is unknown, do not enter "unknown." Simply skip that portion altogether.

    • 4). Enter an open quotation mark, the title of the article or entry, a period to end the entry, and a close quotation mark. Example: Smith, John. "How to Run a Small Business."

    • 5). Enter the name of the website or database, in italicized font. Insert a period to end the site entry. Example: Smith, John. "How to Run a Small Business." businessideas.com. (businessideas.com would be in italicized font.)

    • 6). Enter any version number available, such as a publication date. End the entry with a period. Example: Smith, John. "How to Run a Small Business." businessideas.com. 12 January 2010.

    • 7). Enter page numbers, if any exist. Abbreviate page with pg, no period. Follow the page number with a period. Example: Smith, John. "How to Run a Small Business." businessideas.com. 12 January 2010. pg 3.

    • 8). Enter the term "Web," followed by a period, to denote the source was web based. Follow it with the date the information was first accessed. Example: Smith, John. "How to Run a Small Business." businessideas.com. 12 January 2010. pg 3. Web. 17 July 2010.
