How to Paint the Edges of a Room Quickly

    • 1). Stir the paint with the paint stick until it’s well-mixed. Pour it into the plastic hand-held container until it’s about two-thirds full. Wipe any excess paint from the mouth of the gallon so it can be re-sealed more easily later.

    • 2). Choose an area to begin painting, such as a corner or a wall. The overall finish will be more consistent if the edged areas are still wet when the wall is rolled in, and painting in sections makes this possible. However, edging out an entire room before beginning any rolling is a commonly practiced and professionally accepted painting technique.

    • 3). Load the angle brush with enough paint to complete a long stroke. Make sure the tip of the angle isn?t overloaded with paint, since you?re edging the room without taping it off. Too much paint on the tip of the brush makes it more difficult to control a steady line--finding the right amount of paint for a single stroke may take some practice. The brush shouldn?t be so heavy with paint that it droops. Likewise, if there?s not enough paint, you?ll have to begin new edging lines far more often, increasing the likelihood of mistakes.

    • 4). Remove all light switch and outlet covers to avoid having to tape them perfectly. Place pieces of painter’s tape over uncovered switches and outlets.

    • 5). Moisten some clean rags with water and keep them at hand for quick corrections as you go.

    • 6). Apply the paint with a steady hand. Lead with the tip of the angle brush and work with even, precise pressure so that the bristles fan out just to the very edge of the area and not beyond. Make long strokes each time. Go back over the stroke, slightly away from the edge, to even out excess paint. Repeat the even-handed strokes around door and window frames, in corners, along baseboards and around the ceiling. The consistent hand technique becomes easier and faster with practice.
