What's a holiday without great food and delicious wine at an excellent restaurant or a local tavern? For those who like to explore new cuisines, especially for those who love seafood, Hvar island will certainly offer a true gastronomic experience. Dalmatian cuisine, based on fish, vegetables and olive oil, is very healthy, apart from being incredibly delicious. The world known chef, Anthony Bourdain, during his visit to this island said: €I didn't have any idea what the Croatian cuisine was like. This is world class food, world class wine, world class cheese€.
There are many reasons why you shouldn't miss this real treat for your palate. Here are just some of them:
Restaurants for every taste and wallet
There are over fifty restaurants on the island, which, in addition to traditional cuisine, have a lot of other interesting and delicious offerings. From the most exclusive restaurants with lamb ribs with mint and curry or beef steak with gorgonzola sauce, over taverns with grilled veal or chicken in garlic sauce, to the fast food such as pizza or burger. Whichever the case, you will find your gastronomic pleasure; you can count on that!
Fresh and quality food
Every day the local fishermen deliver freshly caught fish and seafood to the island. Some of the most popular fish you can find here are sea bass, grouper, gilthead, bream, mackerel and sardines. Besides that, there's a wide selection of seafood - octopus, squid, cuttlefish, clams, mussels, shrimps, lobsters. These are usually prepared as light food, so your fish will be served either boiled or grilled. Many restaurants have their own organic gardens or they buy organic vegetables from local producers, so you will certainly be served with a fresh and healthy chard, tomatoes, potatoes and zucchini.
Domestic olive oil and herbs
The traditional Dalmatian cuisine is unimaginable without high quality olive oil and Mediterranean spices. Growing olives and olive oil production on this island is usually a -few-generations-old family tradition, and therefore is considered of the highest quality. Hvar island is rich with wild herbs such as lavender, rosemary, bay leaves and basil; these spices give a special note to each dish.
Desserts
Traditional Dalmatian desserts will delight you with its simplicity. They are made according to old recipes and usually contain Mediterranean fruit, almonds, figs, raisins and honey. The most popular are: mandulati,mendule, smokvenjaci, brustulone and paprenjaci. You can even try lavender ice cream here and kremsnite or apple strudel.
Vine
The good and delicious food certainly deserves a glass of quality local wine. Hvar island has a long history of viticulture dating back to before the arrival of the ancient Greek settlers in 384 years B.C. There are many autochthonous grape varieties from which local wineries make the top quality wines. Some of the most popular are Plavac Mali, Bogdanusa, Posip, Marastina and Debit.
