ZIP Files

• A .ZIP file is a compressed archive file that can contain one file or several. They are used on various operating systems, and work with most compression and decompression programs.
  
  

.ZIP1 Files

• A file with the extension .ZIP1 is a .ZIP file that has been zipsplit. This means there are several .ZIP files containing pieces of the same zipped folder, which might include .ZIP1, .ZIP2, .ZIP3 and so on.
  
  

Function

• .ZIP files are used to compress files so they take up less space, which will make downloading and uploading easier. File compression can only do so much, so zipsplit is used to create .ZIP1 files, .ZIP2, .ZIP3, and so on so files can be downloaded or uploaded in separate pieces.

• .ZIP files are supported by most compression and decompression programs, including Stufflt Expander 2010 and ZipIt for Mac, Stufflt Expander 2009 and WinRAR for Windows, and unzip and funzip for Linux.
  
  

Common Problems

• The most common problem with .ZIP1 and related files is lacking one or more of the zipsplit files. Zipsplit files cannot be decompressed unless you have all of the files.
