Public Speaking - What Your Colleagues Don"t Know
But the thought of speaking to a crowd sends your stomach in knots.
This is a very common problem faced by us all.
But let's step back and re- examine the situation.
When we were learning to walk, we fell many times and it physically hurt, but did that stop us from trying? No! Instead it made our resolve stronger to learn from others to not fall again.
I think that this mindset should be cultivated analogously to public speaking.
Do not fear trying and failing but we must learn from our mistakes and other peoples success to finally achieve our goal.
Let's take a page out of scientist's research methodology.
They make thousands and thousands of experiments in the entire lifetime of their research but we only hear of the success story or so we think.
Remember Sir Alexander Fleming who found penicillin? The growth of the fungi Penicilium was a mistake, he never intended to cultivate it and yet, within a mistake an opportunity presents itself.
Same goes for public speaking, if we were to make a mistake, find ways to make it a window of opportunity instead of viewing it as a disaster.
Let's take an example of public speaking situation where you accidentally dropped a cup of water, make a joke about it.
Not only that the accident has caught the attention of some of your audiences who were distracted but also the joke would captivate them to pay more attention to you.
In addition to that, if every statement that we make in a speech is properly supported by reputable references I'm sure we would feel more confident.
Not only that, our credibility would increase, hence fueling more audiences who are more inclined to listen to our arguments.
Another rule of thumb in giving speeches is to avoid sensitive topics involving religion unless the speech is about religion as it can stir up unnecessary negative emotions among audiences.
People who aspire to be themselves but better at communicating take up public speaking.
Although the first step can be daunting, the results are worth the continuous effort which is invested in it.
Investment can take form in many ways such as attending seminars, reading self help books, listening to self help compact discs.
A small investment can go a great length to improve one's ability to converse fluently and confidently in front of a large crowd.
Speech is also like a sale, if the initial part is not catchy, people will lose interest.
So make the beginning of the speech interesting to captivate the audience.
Time and time again, if the speaker is able to size the audience up and present the way the audience find interesting, the positive feedback from the audience would be very positive.
