What Causes Dishwasher Streaking?
- The streaks on your glassware are generally due to oils that did not wash off during the cycle or minerals from hard water. If you have hard water, there's a high chance that your pipes are bringing calcium and/or magnesium into your dishwasher.
- In October 2010 many dish detergent manufacturers stopped putting phosphates in their detergents to conform with guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency because phosphates harm wildlife in streams and lakes. Phosphates penetrate through the grime, food and grease on dishes and soften the minerals brought in by your water.
- The water temperature might not be hot enough to properly clean the dishes or dry them, causing spotting and/or film. Turn your water heater temperature up to make the water at least 120 degrees but no hotter than 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Using water that is too hot is just as detrimental to dishes as using water that is not hot enough.
- If you have excessive minerals in your water, always use a rinse aid along with your detergent. You should also use more detergent if you have more minerals because the additional detergent eliminates excessive buildup. You may want to run vinegar once a week through your dish cycle to remove the mineral buildup. Fill a bowl, and place it in the bottom rack of your dishwasher while running a cycle.
