    • 1). Download and install an FTP client if you don't currently have one. Installation instructions are on the client's website.

    • 2). Locate your Web hosting username and password. Also verify the FTP host name. You set up this information when you established your hosting account. Log in to your Web hosting account and check your account settings or contact the Web hosting company's help desk if you don't have this information on hand. Web hosting providers vary, but the host name is almost always just your domain name.

    • 3). Open a new connection in the client. You should see a connect button in the toolbar or look in the File menu for an "Add" or "New" option.

    • 4). Wait for the connection window to open. There are fields for the host name, username and password. Enter the information and check to see "FTP" is selected as the connection type.

    • 5). Leave other settings as-is unless you have home network settings that conflict with FTP connections. You would know if you changed your network port settings or if you need to use proxy settings. Make changes if you need to, but most people will use the default settings.

    • 6). Save the connection using the save or connect button in the window. When the connection is complete you may see "Connected" or a green light icon in the status bar.

    • 7). View the website files in the window. Click on a file you want to remove and hit the Delete button on your keyboard. There may also be a "Delete" icon in the toolbar or a "Delete" menu option under "File" or "Edit."

    • 8). Confirm you want to delete if your client prompts you with an "Are you sure?" window. Some clients won't ask for confirmation so make sure you remove the correct file.
