    Basic Duties

    • The basic duties of a clinical service supervisor for aged care include planning, supervising and coordinating medical, health and clinical services to aged patients. Depending on the facility or program, such services may be provided in a hospital, clinic, nursing home, hospice, managed care organization or in private residences through a visitation program. Clinical service supervisors may, but probably do not, have direct contact with patients. They do not make home visits, unless training a new employee. Supervisors oversee the nurses and staff that do have direct contact with patients, monitoring that all caregivers and staff perform duties according to organizational and professional standards. They also assign work and plan activities for staff.

    Fiscal Management

    • The clinical supervisor oversees fiscals operations, including budgetary and accounting matters. A clinical supervisor practices business management by handling financial matters within specific departments or offices and in the organization overall. A supervisor also has authority to hire and train caregivers and personnel and to award raises and salary increases to employees.

    Negotiate Management and Staff

    • Clinical services supervisors serve as liaisons between governing boards and medical staff. They often help to develop and implement organizational policies and procedure and also enforce policies in different departments and offices within the organization. Clinical supervisors also plan initiatives and programs and oversee department leaders to ensure that each department is working to fulfill department goals while also meeting the organization's overall missions and initiatives.

    Education and Training

    • The educational and training requirements for a clinical service supervisor depend on the specific agency or organization. Normally, candidates should have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in nursing or other health field and/or a registered nurse's certification. Some jobs may require a master's degree in nursing. In addition, candidates should have several years of experience in aged care and in a supervisory or management role.
