How to Cool a Room
- 1). Turn on an air conditioner. While this is one of the more common and immediate ways to cool a room, it can also be one of the more expensive. Air conditioning removes the humidity that makes a room feel hotter.
- 2). Turn on fans. This allows for the circulation of air and a cooling effect. You can use overhead fans or portable ones.
- 3). Pull blinds and shades closed. They block out sunlight that can heat a room.
- 4). Open windows. If the air outside is cooler than the air inside, you can lower the temperature by opening a window and letting cooler air into the room. Install an outdoor thermometer to monitor the outside air temperature.
- 5). Insulate your attic. This provides a barrier to prevent heat from radiating into the room.
- 6). Plant a tree. Depending on the size of the tree, this may not be an immediate solution. But as the tree grows, it can serve as a shield to block the sun from heating a room.
- 7). Install reflective film. This is a tint-like film that reduces the sun's glare and ultraviolet rays. Applying it to the windows of the room can cut down on the sun's heat.
- 8). Use exhaust fans and dehumidifiers. Reduce relative humidity in rooms using a dehumidifier or by venting hot air to the outside of the house through exhaust fans. You can also reduce humidity by limiting heat-generating activities such as cooking, bathing and laundry to the cooler nighttime hours.
