    • 1). Fill a mud pan with sheetrock mud. Prevent the mud in the pail from drying out by making sure to put the lid back on after filling your mud pan. Use a 5-gallon pail of mud so that you will have enough to do the entire room.

    • 2). Use a sheetrock knife to apply the mud to the entire surface of each wall. Smooth on a coat of sheetrock mud that is 1/8- to ÂĽ-inch thick. Cover every crack and crevice between blocks, and the entire surface of each block. Use the blade of the mud knife to make sure there are no globs, ridges, or bubbles in the mud as it is applied. Allow the mud 12 hours to dry.

    • 3). Apply a second coat of mud to each wall making the second coat 1/16- to 1/8-inch thick. This ensures the wall surface will be completely smooth.

    • 4). Use an electric hand-held sander on the entire surface of each wall. This removes any burrs, ridges, or bubbles that have dried in the mud. Wear a mask when sanding to avoid breathing in the dust.

    • 5). Fill a paint tray with wall primer. Use a paint roller to apply the primer every wall in the room. Use the primer over the mud to give the wallpaper paste a surface to adhere to. Use a small paint brush or an edger to fill in the corners and edges with the wall primer. Allow the primer to dry for 12 hours.

    • 6). Use a tape measure to find the width and the height of every wall in the room. Use the number of inches wide that the wallpaper is and divide that number by the width of each wall. Do this to find out how many sheets of wallpaper wide each wall is. Multiply the number of sheets wide each wall is by the height of the wall. Do this to figure out how many rolls of wallpaper you will need for each wall.

    • 7). Use a utility knife to cut the first piece of wallpaper according to the height of the first wall. Use a wallpaper paste brush to apply wallpaper paste to the backside of the wallpaper, or hot water to activate already pasted wallpaper. Use a laser level to ensure that the first piece will be straight by projecting a line vertically on the wall. Hang the fist piece. Slide it slightly if needed to ensure that it will be straight according to the level. Hang the rest of the wallpaper checking for straightness using the laser level. You can use the edges of the pieces that you have already hung as guidelines.
