How to Start a Family Home Day Care in Florida
- 1). Complete a home day care application. The state of Florida requires all home day cares to complete an application form, which can be downloaded on the Florida Department of Children and Families website.
- 2). Determine if your home day care will reside in counties that regulate their own licensing (separate from the state). There are six counties in Florida that handle their own licensing, including: Sarasota, Pinellas, Palm Beach, Brevard, Broward and Hillsborough. If you live in one of these counties, contact them for local regulations.
- 3). Pass a background check. With the application, you must provide the full name, date of birth and Social Security numbers for all individuals living in the household. The state will request authorization to run employment history checks, criminal record searches and check central abuse hotline records for everyone in your household.
- 4). Secure a substitute childcare worker. The state of Florida requires that a written plan be submitted with your application detailing who would be able to care for children in case of an emergency. You will need to include the name, address and Social Security number for this person. The state will run a background check.
- 5). Complete an inspection. According to the State of Florida, family home day care facilities must pass a state inspection. After completing the application, the state will contact you to set-up an inspection.
