The 2010 Defense Authorization Act is now law. The act calls for a 3.4 percent across-the-board increase in military basic pay over 2009. rates.
The Obama Administration originally asked for a 2.9 percent increase in basic pay. This is the minimum raise required by law. However, every year for the past several years, Congress has approved a military pay raise slightly larger than that requested by the President, and 2010 was no exception.
Both the House and the Senate agreed to include a 3.4 percent across-the-board military base pay raise in the 2010 Defense Authorization Act.
The below chart shows 2010 monthly basic pay amounts for enlisted members. Military basic pay is subject to federal income taxes, unless earned in a designated combat zone. Whether or not basic pay is subject to state income taxes depends on the laws of the state which the military member claims as his/her legal residence.
