Lycabettus

If you are in Athens, and want a quiet little escape from all of the commotion and racket which comes from the centre, Lycabettus is the perfect place for you.

The centre of Athens is generally very densely populated, as well as polluted. Amidst all of the concrete buildings in the endless jungle of skyscrapers lies Lycabettus - a small hill which allows climbers to get a supreme view of the whole of Athens, whilst escaping from the noise and commotion of the city.

The peak of Mt. Lycabettus lies at 277 meters - high enough to see the whole of Athens from the Acropolis to Pireaus port with a panoramic view. On top of the amazing view, there are 3 other main attractions that climbers would usually come for: St. George - a small chapel, a theatre, 'Lycabettus Horizons' - a small restaurant.

Getting to Lycabettus
Lycabettus lies just south of Psychiko, and near Alexandras. This means that public transport will generally drop you very nearby to Lycabettus. The other option is to take a taxi to drop you right at the base of Lycabettus. Taking a car is not recommended as it can be extremely hard to find a parking space in the centre of Athens during the day.

Once at the base of Lycabettus, there is a choice of either using the funicular railway, or ascending the hill by foot. The funicular railway is usually the preferable option on a hot summers day in Athens as it is a lot cooler and more relaxing than walking up the slope in blistering heat. However on cooler days, the walk up the hill can be enjoyable, as walkers will observe that the whole of Athens becomes visible as it sinks beneath their feet.

At the Summit
When at the top of Lycabettus, the first thing anybody should do is get to a clearing, and admire the awesome panoramic view which is available. Once the view has been admired, there are a number of various things to do at the summit.

One of the biggest attractions of Mt. Lycabettus is the theatre at the summit. It has been modernized from an ancient Greek style theatre into a modern one - although there is a lot of the classic Greek touch left behind. Many internationally famous musicians have come to perform at this theatre, making it one of the most famous theatre's in Greece.

As well as the theatre at the summit of Lycabettus, there is also a beautiful small restaurant called 'Lycabettus Horizons' - perfect for a romantic dinner by sunset. The restaurant offers a wide range of Greek cuisine such as fried cheese, as well as an amazing view to dine with.

Finally, there is a small chapel at the top of Lycabettus which has been chosen by many people for various religious ceremonies such as baptisms, marriages, and even funerals.

Overall, Lycabettus is a very enjoyable trip for any type of person as there are activities there which can interest anyone. If you are a tourist in Greece, Lycabettus is just as important to visit as the Acropolis is!
