How to Install Florescent Lights
- 1). De-energize the old fixture. Do this by shutting off the power to the circuit breaker.
- 2). Remove the bulb from the old fixture.
- 3). Remove old hardware holding the existing light fixture in place.
- 4). Use a circuit tester to make sure there is no power in the wires. This step is important to make sure you avoid electrocution.
- 5). Disconnect lamp wires from circuit line wires, and complete the removal of the old light fixture from the ceiling.
- 1). Use pliers to remove the knockout between where you want your fluorescent light installed and the wires you will attach it to. This step is only required if you are installing a brand new fixture. This step is not required for replacements.
- 2). Insert a piece of plastic bushing in the knockout hole you just made and pull the wires through the bushing.
This step is only required if you are installing a brand new fixture. - 3). Disassemble the new fluorescent lamp as far as necessary to gain access to the fixture wires.
- 4). Connect fixture wires to line wires with wire nuts. Match wires by color: black wire to black wire, white wire to white wire and so on.
- 5). Position the fixture against the ceiling and mount it with the screws packaged with the new lamp. Depending on the style of the lamp, you may have to reassemble the fixture before or after mounting. Restore the power.
