    • 1). Travel to Olivine City, a seaside town south of Route 39. Stock up on healing items and Poke Balls at the Poke Mart.

    • 2). Go to the beach in the southwest corner of the city. Use Rock Smash to break the rocks on the beach to uncover Krabby, a Water-type Pokemon, and Shuckle, a Bug- and Rock-type. You can also find a Hyper Potion beneath a rock. If your game's internal clock says it is Monday, a girl on the beach will give you a Sharp Beak item, which boosts the power of Flying-type attacks.

    • 3). Use Surf to enter the waters of Route 40. As you head south, you will find four trainers. Their Pokemon are all around level 20. You will also encounter Tentacool and Tentacruel, Water- and Poison-type Pokemon. Go fishing with the Good Rod or Super Rod to find additional Water-type Pokemon, including Staryu and Corsola.

    • 4). Surf until you reach Route 41, which is home to the Whirl Islands. You can explore the islands if you have the Whirlpool ability, but doing so is not necessary to reach Cianwood City. Travel around the islands and head southwest. Ten trainers inhabit this route, but you can swim around them if you don't want to battle them now. As you travel the route, you may encounter Mantine, a rare Water- and Flying-type Pokemon.

    • 5). Arrive at Cianwood City's beach. If you've landed on the northern section of the beach, walk south until you reach the small community.
