Professionalism in Interviews
- Professionalism in a job interview begins early, as you prepare for your interview by researching the company and the job. Look at the company's web page for background information such as corporate organization and history. Larger companies may have an annual report available on-line or from the human resources department. If you know anyone who works for the company, you can ask him about the corporate culture and work environment. All this information will help you show the employer how you fit in with the company and how your qualifications meet the job requirements.
- Dress appropriately for your job interview so the interviewer has a good first impression of you. When in doubt, dress up rather than down. For an office or professional job, select a business suit in a conservative color such as dark blue, black, tan or gray. For more relaxed environments, wear neat, clean and pressed clothes. Both men and women should avoid wearing too much cologne and jewelry, including visible body piercings. Women should also use conservative make-up.
- Always be on time for job interviews: in fact, try to arrive five to 10 minutes early. If you are unsure how to get to the interview location, call ahead for exact directions or make a dry run the day before. Always leave extra time in case of traffic delays, lack of parking spaces or other unexpected problems. If you do arrive a few minutes early, take the time to stop in the restroom and check your appearance. Then, you will have a little time to sit, take a deep breath and prepare yourself for the interview.
- Use body language that conveys confidence and professionalism. Whether sitting or standing, keep your back straight and your shoulders back. In addition, shake hands firmly, maintain eye contact and smile.
- Bring extra copies of your resume and references, and carry a notepad in case you need to make brief notes during your interview. Be positive about your past job experiences and enthusiastic about this job opportunity. Within 24 hours of the interview, write a thank you note to the interviewer expressing your thanks and reiterating your interest in the job.
