Uses of the National Flag
- If two flags are flown, the American flag should be higher than the others. That flag should be raised first, lowered last. There should not be any flags flying to the right of the American flag, the viewer's left.
- American flags can be used to cover a casket as it is carried to the burial site. When using a flag to cover a casket, place the flag so the union is at the top, where the deceased's head is, and it should flow over the left shoulder. It is proper etiquette to remove the flag before the deceased is buried and not to let the flag touch the ground.
- In some homes and buildings, American flags may be shown on the wall or in a frame. When the national flag is displayed like this, it should be done so properly. The flag should be flat. If being displayed vertically, the union should be at the top. If being displayed horizontally, it should be at the top and to the viewer's left. American flags should never be displayed backward or be used as curtains. Drapes of red, white and blue are acceptable.
- Soldiers or other men may carry an national flag when marching. If marching with men who carry other national flags, the American flag should be in the center of the line, but it does not have to be raised higher. All the flags should be of equal height. They should also be the same size. This is to show the world that the U.S. is a peaceful one. If the military is carrying the flags, the army should be first, then the marine corps, navy, air force and, finally, the coast guard. If others exist, they will go after the coast guard.
- If being displayed on a podium, the American flag should hold superior prominence. It can be closest to the audience or raised higher and should be to the speaker's right-hand side. If there are other national flags, they should be to the speaker's left. If an American flag is being displayed on a car, it should be displayed on the right-hand side. When hanging in windows, the flag should appear backward from the inside, so that viewers on the outside see it correctly.
