How to Cut Paint With Water
- 1). Stir the latex paint with a paint stick, beginning by stirring only the top and slowly submerging the stick until it scrapes the bottom of the paint can. Stirring the paint will indicate whether you need to cut the paint with water. After you have stirred the paint to the bottom of the can, lift the paint stick and watch the paint run off the tip. If the paint is lumpy or sticks to the stirring stick, it needs to be cut with water.
- 2). Fill a bucket with cool, not cold, water. To test the temperature of the water, place your hand in it. If the water is too cold for comfort, it's too cold to add to the paint. Add two tablespoons of water for every pint of paint.
- 3). Stir the paint again as described in Step 1. If the paint flows off the paint stick, there is enough water in the paint. If it is still clumpy, add one tablespoon of water to the paint and test again. Repeat until the paint runs off the paint stick. The paint should have a thick, batter-like consistency.
- 4). Add paint conditioner, such as Floetrol, to ensure that the paint appears smooth. Each kind of paint conditioner has its own application instructions, so read the directions thoroughly before using.
