Gardening and landscaping are two ways to create a beautiful array of plants and flowers in your yard and transform that space into a desirable habitat.
The time it can often take to not only create a beautiful landscape, but to also maintain it can be a frustration for many of us who live in a fast paced world with never enough time.
We put together a few ideas on how to garden on a time crunch.
Although many of the ideas won't save you time in the beginning, many of the ideas will prevent you from having to spend a lot of time on maintenance and keeping your beautiful plants and flowers flourishing for years to come.
1.
Install a drip irrigation system or sprinkler system in your garden.
There are many simple drip irrigation kits you can purchase at a local Home Depot or such which can maintain a pot or planter.
Some are as simple as plugging in to an outside water line and will spike in the ground and provide a miniature sprinkler system or drip irrigation system to water a confined area.
These are simple ways to make a garden low maintenance.
You can also hire a landscaper to run an underground irrigation system.
This will be a little more costly but will save you time and keep from any exposed hoses showing in your garden.
2.
Use xeriscaping techniques.
Modify the garden so that less watering is required.
This will create what is referred to as a low water garden.
This can be achieved by focusing on plants and flowers that require less water in general.
The advantages are that you can save a lot of time and money with lower water bills.
The disadvantage is that you will have fewer options to choose from.
Common plants are lavender, juniper, or sage.
Other drought resistant plants can be used and are spotted by having thick, glossy, and fuzzy features.
3.
Purchase self-watering window boxes.
Window boxes with water reservoirs can keep your soil moist and plants healthy.
They can also let you keep your eyes on them from the ease of a kitchen window.
Window box gardening is a growing trends, especially for beginner gardeners who have little time and or commitment to starting a full blow garden in their backyard.
If your window boxes use reservoirs, it's possible that they can hold enough water to last up to 8 weeks so that you can maintain a window box garden even in the hottest conditions with very little effort and time commitment.
They can also help integrate a garden area in front of the house with the house so that there is a better flow and feel.
