How to Grow Grass on Your Roof

    • 1). Contact your local county government, to be sure that it is permissible to grow grass on your roof and to inquire about any zoning permits needed to begin your project. Also, repair any cracks or small holes in your roof and gutter system that may be present before starting your project.

    • 2). Prepare your roof by painting it with a waterproof paint sealant, to protect it. Once it has dried, line the roof with polyethylene plastic sheeting, which can be purchased at a home improvement store, and staple it down with a staple gun to secure it.

    • 3). Nail down 1-inch-by-12-inch pressure-treated wood boards, to the sides of the roof with a nail gun, where the grass will grow, creating an enclosure. This enclosure will help keep the soil in place, when it is laid down. Leave one 8-inch gap between two boards that are near the gutter system, to allow water to drain, once the project is complete.

    • 4). Lay down drainage mats, over the plastic sheeting, when the wood enclosure has been completed. After the drainage mats have been placed, pour a layer of loose gravel over it. Lay another layer of the drainage mats over the loose gravel, once it has been spread over the roof. This will allow water to properly drain from the soil, when the grass is watered.

    • 5). Apply 4 inches of soil over the drainage mat, covering the whole area. Rake the soil to prepare it for seeding. Once the soil is ready, using your hand or hand-held seed spreader, spread the grass seed evenly over the soil. Water the soil thoroughly once the seeds have been spread and continue watering two to three times a week or as necessary, until grass has sprouted.
