How to Create a Worm Bin
- 1). Drill 30 evenly spaced 1/4-inch holes in the top of only one of the lids for your bins. Drill 20 holes that are 1/4 inch in the bottom of each bin for drainage. Finally, drill holes 1 inch apart around the top of each bin for ventilation.
- 2). Shred newspaper into 1-inch strips and dampen it, squeezing out excess water. Fill both bins with 3 to 4 inches of shredded newspaper. Add and mix leaves and dirt to the newspaper.
- 3). Cut out the cardboard so it fits inside the bin and dampen it. Add the worms to the leaves and dirt in one of the bins. Place the cardboard over them.
- 4). Place the unventilated lid beneath the supports and put one bin on top of it; the lid will catch any liquid that drains from the bins. Stack the second bin on top of the first and put the ventilated lid on top of it. Keep the bins in a well-ventilated area.
- 5). Feed your worms slowly, beginning only with the top bin. Give them table scraps that do not contain meat or dairy, such as cereal, fruit, vegetables and coffee grounds. Bury the food in different areas of the bins and keep it covered.
Once there are no recognizable food scraps left, begin adding food only to the bottom bin; the worms will move there and after a month, you will be able to remove your compost from the top bin. Refill the top bin with newspaper, dirt and leaves and place it beneath the other bin.
