How to Build a Basic Treehouse

    • 1). Locate an appropriate tree to accommodate the type of treehouse you are planning to construct. Check with your local authorities to make sure that the tree you choose doesn't have any restrictions on it in regard to pruning or any other protective issues. Select a tree that allows enough space for your plans and future growth around the treehouse. Look for a tree with appropriately strong horizontal branches.

    • 2). Construct a flooring platform to provide a secure foundation for the basis of the treehouse. Build it close to the trunk of the tree. Balance and level the platform centrally around the tree and use diagonal bracing for strength if needed. Try to avoid unnecessary damage to the tree by using rope lashing as opposed to nails and screws. Leave a hatch or access opening in the floor for a safer access point than a wall door, especially if a solid ladder is added below the hatch. A floor hatch and a wall door provide an extra opening for entering or exiting the tree house.

    • 3). Assemble the walls on the ground to minimize the risk of accidents while building in the upper portions of the tree. Install any windows and doors that your plans include at this time.

    • 4). Hoist the walls into the tree and complete the construction by fastening them to the flooring platform and each other.

    • 5). Build the roof after the walls have been erected and installed using external plywood. Cover the roof with tar paper or roofing felt and then finish with shingle or wood shakes.
