So What's On TV? When it comes to your young children and television, how much TV is too much TV for them? Letting your kid watch TV is not a bad thing - if done in moderation.
There are lots of quality programs that are tailored for children of different age ranges - from programs that can help your toddler learn the a, b, c or memorize numbers via songs and rhymes; spelling and pronunciation programs or documentaries on nature for older children - children stand to gain so much from watching moderate TV.
However, child and family oriented organizations like The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly advise against TV time for children under the age of 2.
They suggest that children should be introduced to reading, sleeping more and playing with educational toys.
It is believed that, from 0 to 2 years, a child's brain is undergoing rapid development and as such, a child's brain may not be able to cope with the rapid flashes associated with TV.
Also, these organizations advise parents not to allow children get more than 2 hours in front of a TV each day.
Excess TV for children can lead to slow brain development, poor mental stimulation, exposure to unhealthy habits like drinking and smoking, dissociation from reality and the people around them, poor social integration, interaction and etiquette, excessive and unhealthy weight gain, laziness among others.
They may also imbibe social vices like stealing, lying, cheating or bullying when exposed to the wrong programs.
Parents who use television as a way to distract their children in order to run errands, do their chores, wrap up office work brought home or get some alone time actually do this at their own detriment and at a lot of children's detriment as this is more often than not, counterproductive.
Parents should ensure they restrict their children,s TV time as much as possible and try to introduce them to more productive activities like reading, learning musical instruments, painting or other creative things.
Parents should also filter many kind of things their children are exposed to on TV.
Although it may seem impossible to dictate what your kids view on the television set,but, by following the above suggestions and sticking to a plan, you will soon notice that these patterns become second nature.
